The winter season brings with it many unique and striking sights that are seen by a relative few. This view overlooking ice-covered islands on Lake Superior is one that caught my attention while I was video taping it early one day. While studying it through the lens, I was mesmerized by the pounding of the waves throwing up a spray that covered the islands with thick layers of ice.
I returned later that day with my painting gear to find that the water had settled a bit. In place of violent crashing waters, I was now treated to a rich sky lit up by the setting sun and still-wet sheaths of shimmering ice.
Dusk fell as I attempted to capture the scene on my canvas. In near darkness I hiked out to the rhythm of the waves rolling up against the frozen shores.
