On the south west of Manitoulin Island lies a stretch of unique coast whose geology is known as alvars. One of the great parts of exploring and painting is learning and experiencing new things. This region is known by its very flat rock, and well flat everything else it seems. This environment houses some of the largest bugs Ive seen in Ontario, including some that we personally got to know during our stay. Namely, massive wolf spiders and huge caterpillars. It also housed interesting and subtly beautiful scenery that I was privileged to paint, including this piece just around sunset.
